RENOVATION | METS

Located on the fifth floor of a 1960’s apartment building in Mets area of Athens, the residence is airy and well-lighted along its north-south axis. Featuring a spacious southern balcony and panoramic view of the Acropolis, the apartment’s distinctive longitudinal layout, coupled with the entrance positioned at one end, has resulted in the creation of an elongated corridor connecting the living room, kitchen, and two bedrooms.

The basic objective during the redesign was to eliminate this corridor, enhancing the apartment’s transparency and preserving functional living space. This vision aligns seamlessly with the owner’s desire for additional living areas and one single bedroom.

The walls that define the enclosed rooms of the kitchen and the supplementary bedroom were dismantled, giving way to the establishment of a new, open-plan kitchen – now the focal point of the home. Harmonizing the visual flow between the central kitchen space and the open office and relaxation area is a dual-sided wooden panel featuring both open and closed elements. This panel serves as kitchen cabinets on one side and transforms into a surfaced division within the office, segmented by an oak wood frame. To enhance the vibrant atmosphere, a palette of four primary colors—blue, ochre, red, and white—was meticulously selected for the resulting individual color areas. These hues resonate throughout all the designed furniture of the house, infusing a lively ambiance as natural light diffuses through the color surfaces. The newly installed oak wooden floors serve as a unified ‘canvas,’ enhancing the perception of continuity and spaciousness throughout the space. The oak frame theme extends seamlessly to all custom-designed furniture, including the kitchen cabinets, the bookcase, and the office shelves. Creating a contrast against the warm wooden elements that define the space, marble surfaces in both White of Dionysos and Gray of Aliveri were chosen for the kitchen counters and various elements in the bathroom area.
